One of the biggest problems with the best anti-virus solutions is that they all cost money to purchase and even more money to maintain a subscription. It is understandable that not everyone is ready to settle down with their dream virus scanner because of budget reasons. The next best thing is to settle with a good free anti-virus scanner like AVG.
AVG is extremely good for a free software and can effectively detect even the latest viruses, providing that the pattern files stay up-to-date. However, there are a few weaknesses in the application including the high frequency of false positives turned in by the virus scanner and it can get quite annoying.
Once you have the money you need to install a paid anti-virus scanner, you need to first uninstall and remove AVG because having two virus scanners can cause erratic results in system stability and performance. It is also important to make sure that AVG is totally removed in your system because other virus scanners may leave an error stating that AVG is still installed. For this reason, here are several methods that you can try in permanently removing AVG Anti-Virus.
Using “Add/Remove Programs” (or “Programs and Features” in Vista)
If you have uninstalled applications in the past using the Control Panel, you should be able to uninstall AVG Anti-Virus the same way. This uninstall method may not completely remove everything, but in most cases, it should work just fine. Before trying this, make sure you close any open applications including the AVG application.
Then simply go to the Control Panel and click “Add/Remove Programs” for XP users or “Programs and Features” for Vista users. Find “AVG” in the list and click “Remove” or “Uninstall”. To make sure everything has been removed, go to the “Program Files” folder in your C: drive and see if there is any folder called “Grisoft” or “AVG”. Delete that folder to ensure that the most important components are removed.
Other Methods
Unfortunately unlike the other virus scanners that offer removal tools incase problems arise with standard uninstallation, AVG has none to offer. However, if you have problems accessing your Control Panel for whatever reason, you can try downloading the latest setup file in AVG’s website and run it. There should be an option there to uninstall and remove AVG and if that doesn’t work, try the “repair” option and then immediately uninstall it from there.
For better chances of success, consider purchasing Perfect Uninstaller which is a 3rd party application that helps completely uninstall programs quickly and easily. Like the original method, close AVG first and then use Perfect Uninstaller’s “Special Uninstall Wizard” and select the AVG version that you have installed.
Perfect Uninstaller can be used to perfectly uninstall any other applications that are in and out of the standard Add/Remove programs list making it the most recommended method in uninstalling AVG and getting rid of any other unwanted applications.
